today, down comes the american flag. for the rest of the month, i fly the french flag. why? french independence day, La Fête Nationale (commonly known as "Bastille Day" here) is on july 14th. few people realise that there would be no united states of america without the french, and conversely that there would be no french republic without the american revolution.
it all goes back to 1781, and the revolutionary battle of yorktown. see, the american colonies declared independence in 1776, but didn't actually win it until british general cornwalis was driven out of virginia at yorktown, 5 years later. here's what happened:
cornwalis landed at yorktown, a stone's throw from the original settlement at jamestown, with a massive militia. the american patriots were greatly out-numbered on virginia soil. general washington and his troops were dispatched from new york to meet the invasion. even with support from french troops headed by count rochambeau, the colonial army was no match for the massive onslaught from england.
as washington and rochambeau's troops reached central virginia, they were joined by the french troops commanded by the marquis de lafayette, and numbering around 3,000. the british navy was contained by french admiral françois joseph paul de grasse, and the combined, mostly french, colonial allied army.
The Allies placed up to 375 guns, mortars and siege weaponry along their lines to bombard Yorktown. The siege guns fired an average 1.2 shells or bombs every minute, or 1,728 per day. By the time the Siege ended, some 36,288 shots were fired into Yorktown. Although the British had 240 pieces of artillery - consisting mainly of light guns and mortars - they had no horses to drag their guns into position, so they were of very little use.

AX is WIN. Also, Toshihiko Seki is amazing. He was a lot of fun in the panel, did some singing, did some screaming, and did a whole lot of being hot.
He flailed adorably when I walked up to him for my autograph dressed as Iruka, clapped his hands and called me beautiful! My life is complete nao. (and no, I'm not being sarcastic XD)
